NEBOSH, National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety

Course Introduction

The course provides a broad base of knowledge of UK and EU Legislation, awareness of work place hazards, and an understanding of the nature and types of occupational health issues relating to places of work. We offer this course with our senior associate, who holds the programme license.

Course Outline

Examination

The qualification comprises of the completion of 3 exam papers:

• Paper A1: Management of safety and health (Managing safety, compliance with the law (UK/EU)
• Paper A2: Identifying and controlling hazards (Process hazards, health hazards and fire prevention)
• Paper B: Practical assessment (this requires an inspection of a live working environment, for the delegate to identify the hazards, and to write a short report to Management giving credible argument to consequences of non - compliance with legislation ands the identification of appropriate corrective measures)

The candidate must pass the 2 - hour written papers A1 and A2, achieving a minimum of 45% in each paper, and achieve a 60% mark in paper B. All 3 papers must be passed, failure will require only the failed paper to be retaken.

Papers A1 and A2 are submitted to NEBOSH for marking, Paper B is marked by the senior associate, due to my corporate membership to the Institute of Occupational safety and health (IOSH)

Timetable

NEBOSH make it mandatory to provide a minimum of 87 hours tuition time. We currently provide 102 hours. The course is run on a modular basis, which is normally run on a 3 by 1 week block release basis. We normally run the course on consecutive months, timed to coincide with the next appropriate National exam sitting. There are 4 National exam sittings in each year, March, June, September and December.

The additional tuition time is to provide additional benefits to the delegate in providing invaluable revision and exam technique opportunities.

The course is run at our senior associates training facilities at the Hillhouse International site at Thornton , here the delegates can benefit from the proximity of operational process manufacturing plants with a number of field trips included by way of practical demonstrations of health and safety principles.

The intended learning outcome of the NEBOSH National general certificate are that candidates will be able to:

• Identify the common hazards and unsafe practices likely to be found in workplaces and know the appropriate preventative measures to be taken.
• Advise on appropriate actions to minimise the risk of fire in the workplace and assist in the development of procedures to deal with fire.
• Monitor Management policies, procedures and performance in ensuring health and safety in the workplace.
• Assist in the preparation and regular review of statements and safety policy.
• Describe how human and organisational factors can affect health and safety performance.
• Use proactive and reactive strategies to prevent or control the risk of accidents and ill - health.
• Specify the health and safety training needs of young, inexperienced and newly appointed persons.
• Communicate effectively on health and safety matters.
• Prepare internal memoranda, letters and formal reports on health and safety.
• Identify sources of guidance and advice on health and safety.
• Maintain an information retrieval system and disseminate information needed.
• Liaise with safety committees and facilitate relations with employee representatives.
• Investigate events which led, or might have led to death, injury, ill health or dangerous occurrence; prepare formal reports and make logical and cost effective proposals to prevent repetition.
• Maintain records of the events of 13
• Identify the main requirements of health and safety and welfare legislation and approved codes of practice that apply to the workplace.
• Use reference materials to identify the requirements of health and safety legislation and to ensure sound health and safety practices.
• Select appropriate monitoring techniques (audits, surveys inspections, tours and sampling) for a given work situation.
• Undertake workplace inspections, note any hazards and the way they are safeguarded, identify safe and unsafe working practices, and recommend appropriate and cost effective remedial action.
