Carnforth

Carnforth Town

Carnforth is a small town in the north of Lancashire, England, situated at the north-east end of Morecambe Bay. The population was around 5500 in the year 2000.

Due to the closeness of the coast and the hills, the West Coast Main Line, the A6 and the Lancaster Canal all pass through the town. The M6 motorway passes just to the east, linked to Carnforth by the A601(M).

Situated in the north of the County of Lancashire, this beautiful area combines superb countryside and coast with a rich and fascinating history. It is widely believed Carnforth derived its name from its position by the ford crossing the River Keer. Settled by invading Danes, many of the place names in the surrounding district suggest Scandinavian origin . A range of specialist shops, newly refurbished War Memorial Square and pubs and restaurants make Carnforth the ideal base for businesses, and acts a gateway to the Lake District. Brief Encounter

Carnforth Railway Station

Brief Encounter plaque

"It all started on an ordinary day in the most ordinary place in the world - the refreshment room at Milford Junction," says Laura (Celia Johnson), the middle-class heroine of the film, Brief Encounter (1946), directed by David Lean from a play by Noel Coward. To the surging accompaniment of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto, Laura, a housewife and mother, is swept off her feet by the dashing Dr Alec Harvey (Trevor Howard), also married. Despite a series of brief encounters in the railway station, their romance is doomed due to their middle-class code of decency and self-respect. Laura remains with her dull but dependable husband Fred, who spends his evenings smoking a pipe while wrestling with the Times crossword.

The market town of Carnforth was the famous film location for the classic love story 'Brief Encounter'. Carnforth Station Visitor Centre and tearooms (an exact replica of the refreshment rooms in the film) are open at Carnforth Railway Station.
