Fire Risk Assessments

Safety Management (UK) recently conducted a number of training exercises for Amey, operators of the Windermere Ferry, a vehicular cable ferry on Lake Windermere. The ferry crosses at about its mid-point, from Ferry Nab in Bowness-on-Windermere to Far Sawrey, a distance of some 1,500 feet (460 m), making travel to and from significantly quicker, whilst losing none of its picturesque beauty.

There has been a ferry at the site of the current Windermere Ferry for more than 500 years. The earliest craft were rowed across the lake, whilst later ferries were steam powered and, more recently, diesel powered. Today the ferry is owned by Cumbria County Council but operated on their behalf by Amey Infrastructure Services Ltd. The ferry operates all year, with services every 20 minutes from early morning to mid-evening. A toll is charged.

Safety Management (UK) delivered onboard firefighting training for crew members, who use a light portable pump mounted on the vessel and 45mm firefighting hose to deal effectively with any incident that may develop onboard.

The crew were also given water rescue training. Whilst it is extremely unlikely that passengers would fall from the vessel, the crew were trained in methods and procedures to effectively rescue persons overboard, this included using flotation devices and throw-bags.

VHF Radio training requires expert training and skills to use operationally. Crew members completed the one day GMDSS – Short Range Certificate, and so can now competently use the VHF Radio on Lake Windermere.

Brian Gregory, Managing Director, said ‘It is always enjoyable to get involved in diverse and interesting projects such as the cable-drawn ferry. Fire safety is at the core of everything we do at Safety Management, but we are always keen to apply our knowledge to different industries and operations in order to help them stay safe.’
